A Clinical Study of Breast Biopsy

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to report of clinical analysis of 277 cases of breast biopsies which were performed at Busan National University Hospital from Sept. 1970 to Sept. 1976. After analysis of all biopsy cases, obtained following results.
1. Among 277 cases, benign were 232 cases (83.8%) and 45 cases(16.2%) were malignant.
2. The mean age of benign diseases were 36.2 years and malignant diseases were 46. 1 years.
3. The symptoms and signs on biopsy were breast mass 268(96.7%) cases, axillary mass, skin retrac¡© tion, and nipple discharge in that order.
4. The duration of illness was shortened compare to previous report (2) and 172(62%) cases come to hospital within 6 months symptom duration.
5. The discrepancy between physical examination and pathological diagnosis were as follows.
a). Clinically suspected as normal, chronic inflammation and benign diseases were 152 cases where malignant case was only one case. (by biopsy)
b). Clinically suspected as chronic inflammation or benign tumor but questionable malignancy suspe¡© cted cases were 57, where 6 cases (10. 5%) revealed as malignancy.
c). Clinically suspected as malignant or¢¥ highly suspicious to malignancy were 68 cases where 37(54.4%) cases revealed as malignancy.
6. Because of low incidence of malignancy in benign suspected cases that, if clinically suspected as benign tumor of breast mass then, it is reasonable to recommend to get self examination, periodic physical examination, or mammography in stead of surgical biopsy.
7. If the mass suspected as highly malignant or mammographically malignancy suspicious groups are recommendable surgical biopsy or needle biopsy.
